Ben Sherman clothing line was born in 1963, but an independent young man. Originally born Alfred Benjamin Sugarman, the young man changed his name and started a new life and a new clothing line; hence Ben Sherman was truly born. The first location of the Ben Sherman line was in Brighton England, but eventually moved to Northern Ireland due to the increase of sales and the craze started by the Ben Sherman button-down shirt. This Ben Sherman shirt started the legacy which has continued strong since its inception, and is looking forward to evolving with the future.

The Mod fad of the 1960’s quickly took to the Ben Sherman shirt. It was new and innovative, and gave them the look that they were trying to achieve, smart, good-looking and a bit tough and cool. This was not the only group that found what they needed in the Ben Sherman shirt. The skinheads and the new rock-n-roll age found the look of the shirt to be exactly what was needed for their rebellious and trendy looks. The Ben Sherman shirt was the working man’s shirt, but with a flare of upper crust.

Ben Sherman expanded again in the 1970’s to incorporate all forms of clothing. The Ben Sherman line began manufacturing casual men’s wear and became one of the biggest manufacturers of casual men’s where in the United Kingdom and the United States. It was during this decade that the punk generation grabbed hold of the Ben Sherman clothing line and remade it to be their own. The look continued into the music and through it all became a staple for young musicians and youth of the day. The expansion of Ben Sherman in the 1970’s also included the creation of a boy’s clothing line that was an immediate smash.

When punk died and Ska took over in the 1980’s Ben Sherman became the clothing of the new rebels and the new bands of the time. Ben Sherman continued to evolve and integrated the looks of the 80’s with the Mod fashions that started it all. The one thing that set the Ben Sherman Company apart was that they never lost sight of the roots that had started it all, and continued to offer the classic Ben Sherman button down shirt.

Indie bands of the 1990’s were constantly clad in Ben Sherman clothes. Bands like Oasis that made a name for themselves helped the Ben Sherman clothing line to stay entrenched in music and the rebel movement of the youth. The fashion stayed in touch with the working man and the young and Ben Sherman was the preferred clothes for many youth of the day.

While Ben Sherman has incorporated a woman’s line, fragrances, sunglasses, and much more, the Ben Sherman Company has stayed true to what made them a household name. The Ben Sherman Company loves the rebel and loves the music. Ben Sherman will continue to grow and evolve, but will always remain loyal to the classic Ben Sherman button down shirt.
